SUMMARY
Powered by an API and algorithm from Are You Watching This (RUWT) that tracks when games get more exciting or “hot”, we developed a series of in-restaurant experiences including dynamic screens and mobile app supplements to enhance Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurants sports-watching experience.
GOALS & OBJECTIVES
- Concept experiences that enhance a BWW Customer’s visit at the restaurant
- Concept and demonstrate how these APIs could be integrated with existing app and systems
MY ROLE
- Researched competitors and similar apps and experiences
- Concepted and Designed potential User Experience
- Designed UI
CHALLENGES
- No significant research about Target Users or current behaviors
- There were few conversations with BWW Tech Leads about existing systems
HISTORY
RUWT had worked with some sports bars in the past, and was hoping to get Buffalo Wild Wings as a customer as they had over 1200 stores nationwide and were looking to provide a premiere sports-watching experience.
RESEARCH
Didn’t have much to go on here.
APPROACH
We tried to marry “hot games” technology and indicators with BWW hot sauces, which seemed like a natural fit. We hoped this tailored approach with the tech to the brand itself and may help close the deal.
PROCESS
Research & Requirements Gathering: Reviewed competitors and similar experiences
Sketches & Wireframes: Sketched and designed key workflows, low-fi wires, and reviewed with founder
Final UI: Designed UI, leveraging some of BWW existing styles
FINAL SOLUTION
HOT GAMES & SAUCE NAMES
A rolling tab on-screen and a rolling screen embedded in the BWW mobile app helped viewers keep tabs on key games that were getting exciting and the app prioritized the ones that were the “hottest”. The heat rating was based on the RUWT algorithm and related technologies and integrated to BWW sauce names.
WHAT’S HOT MATCHUP DISPLAYS
The experience on the main screens would cycle through all games, ranked by a heat score, then show details of those matchups throughout the day. The mobile version required a click through to see those details due to mobile screen size constraints.
WHO’S HOT PLAYER DISPLAYS
As 60 million people play Fantasy Football a year in the U.S. and Canada, and a popular season of sports watching at BWW centered around the NFL schedule, we focused on Customers who wanted to see stand-out players (and their stats) in games they were watching, with live updates.
SOCIAL POSTS SCREENS
Dynamic promo screens allowed BWW to show related content and encourage users in-restaurant to join the Social Media conversation in an effort to boost user online voice and BWW impressions. Users could see their own posts and pictures on the screens throughout the restaurant and be connected to others in any location, tracked by key hastags.
LIVE PROMO SCREENS
This is just one example of how live games and scores could be tracked and tied to a particular promotion. It was designed as a complimentary display, that could be tailored to the day’s sporting events. In this case, it could be tied to a particular part of the country, where many patrons were Texas Longhorn fans.
