SUMMARY

This was a concept pitched to NBCSports for supplemental additions to their sports app featuring technology from RUWT. The tech and API powered the app in part by showing exciting or “hot” games in progress.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • Concept and demonstrate how these APIs could be integrated with existing app
  • Update the app’s UI to compliment the new tech
MY ROLE
  • Researched competitors and similar apps
  • Concepted and Designed UX updates
  • Designed UI updates
CHALLENGES
  • No significant research about Target Users or current behaviors
  • There were no direct conversations with Engineers about performance feasibility
HISTORY

This was part of a pitch and concept to NBCSports for some additions to their apps leveraging RUWT sports data and APIs.

RESEARCH

I only had information from the Founder about the Product space and his perspective on NBCSports’ needs. No extensive research on Users were available to me, sadly.

APPROACH

Our approach was to not overhaul the existing app yet feature the tech from RUWT, which focused on “hot” games in progress and nudges users through the app, through push notifications, etc.

PROCESS

Research & Requirements Gathering: Reviewed competitors and similar apps

Sketches & Wireframes: Sketched and designed key workflows, low-fi wires, and reviewed with founder

Final UI: Designed improved UI, leveraging some of existing patterns

FINAL SOLUTION
SKETCHING / WHITEBOARDING

I generally organize myself with sketches and whiteboarding sessions. In this case, I worked closely with the founder to understand the tech, and apply good UX to the experience.

  • whiteboard with sketches
ALL SPORTS & ALL GAMES UI (MAIN VIEW)

Indicators of “hot games” or interesting games were at the forefront of RUWT’s tech. It had developed an algorithm to determine this, indicated by green, yellow, red color indicators.

SPECIFIC GAME UI

As a User continued to a specific game screen, details for all stats, a game summary and line-ups could be viewed through a tabbed UI.

SPORT-SPECIFIC SCOREBOARD UI

A User could see all games for a sport like soccer, and see indicators of “hot games” and use alerts and notifications actions. Some of these features included push notifications and syncing to a DVR to record a game.

OUTCOME
  • I wasn’t involved in the pitch but it was well-received by NBCSports
  • I didn’t hear the final outcome as the sales cycle was quite long and this was a contract project
REFLECTION

Concepting has few hurdles, but that’s not always a good thing. When the requirements are slim, and the project is just a pitch, anything goes. But when anything goes, reigning in ideas and filtering to the best, is difficult. And as Orson Wells said, “The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.”
